Bosham first racing weekend gets off to a good start

Saturday 19th March saw six Tideways and a Sharpie take to the water on the first day of classic dinghy racing and with only one plastic boat amongst them it was a credit to the owners to have got the wooden boats ready in time. Varnishing needs warm weather which we have not had so far. With a big tidal flow – the Moon was closest to the Earth for many a year – and fickle breezes, the challenges were to be had on the water as well as in the boat shed. The Tideways, true their name made very good progress in the little gusts and dodging the tide to come out on corrected time. The Sharpie’s helm lost his concentration and missed a mark which cost him the race.

Sunday saw the turn of the modern boats with 42 joining the racing including the venerable Scows, lots of cadet sailors and a variety of Fevas, Toppers, Lasers, Finn and Streakers. It was a day for the Lasers who romped home from an ambitious course down the channel using their superior reaching abilities to open up a gap on all the other boats.

We’d had two days of racing in sunshine, variable light winds and plenty of time to catch up after racing on the club terrace over a drink and a snack.

It has been a long winter.
