Laser Radial Training April 2012
Laser Update 2012
2011 was a strong year for the Lasers with the Class well represented at most club events from both Standard and Radials and it continues to grow, especially in the latter. Particular highlights were the Club’s Laser Open which was a rather heavy weather affair (I managed to break my mast) and the 19 boat turnout for the Junior Week Radial Fleet, the largest ever, which produced some very competitive racing also in challenging conditions.
To try and capitalise on the success for JW I have arranged a 2 day race training package with an RYA Laser Youth Coach for the 2nd & 3rd of April. The course is aimed at Bosham Cadet Radial sailors, specifically those who wish to improve their racing performance. Places will be limited so please contact the Club Office soonest if you are interested. This will be a great way to start the season especially if you are relatively new to the boat.
I would also encourage our Cadet Radial sailors to race in the medium handicap for the Clubs’ series racing rather than in the slow handicap. Provided you are reasonably competent and that your parents have completed the required proforma (contact the Office) to allow you to so, you can then enjoy the more competitive and challenging courses the outer harbour offers and get to sail the boat to its full potential.
For those of you who want a greater challenge and test their metal against the area’s best then I would recommend competing in the UK Laser Association’s South Coast Grand Prix which is a series of open events held at clubs along the South Coast. The Grand Prix 2012 programme can be seen here .
The series includes the Bosham Laser Open meeting, which is due to be held on Sunday 22nd July. This year the event will be run from the Club itself rather than Cobnor but still with Committee boat starts out in the harbour, which should better suit the home sailors. As with all Laser opens there will be racing for all the Laser Classes; Standard, Radial and 4.7s.
