What is a duty at Bosham Sailing Club?
It's a contribution to the common good, a chance to meet up with old friends or meet new ones, a way of giving some particular expertise or enthusiasm to the continuing enjoyment associated with being a member of a unique sailing club in one of the most beautiful harbours on the south coast.
Every member under the age of 70, but over the age of 16 should do at least one duty per season. Many members do far more and have their favourite slots which they grab at the earliest opportunity.
The Duties are organised via "DutyMan", an on-line system which works extremely well. Problems associated with it have always been traced back to the currency of email accounts. So please ensure that the club has the one which you are currently using.
Last year we had teams maintaining the Raptackle, clearing up the Dinghy Park, scoring the races, being Race Officers, Assistant Race Officers and RIB crews and drivers. We also need Race Recorders on 16 occasions when the racing is a bit busier. This year we need people to learn the Sailwave software and help with scoring.
Last year we used 50 Race Officers, nearly 200 AROs, and nearly 250 Power Boat Drivers and their crews. You might think that is enough. But actually we not only need fresh blood but we also want to give more people the opportunity to join in the activities. And of course some do exercise their right to stop at 65! Thank goodness many do not!
Of course you can just grab a particular slot, but why not get a gang of mates together and come mob-handed to the occasion? Just make sure that you can cover at least some of the range of roles required.
If you find that you need to change a duty, you can find a substitute who agrees and make the swap on-line.
