Course Booking

Race Training for Optimists, Toppers, and Lasers require a minimum entry of RYA Youth Sailing Stage 3 or equivalent experience (those who are not at this level cannot unfortunately be accepted on the course). Full details are available from the relevant Class Captains.

The Club currently has 28 dinghies in total for training, comprising of 18 x Optimists, 6 x RS Fevas and 4 x Laser Bahias. These boats are available for all those taking part in RYA Training Courses and will be allocated by the Course instructor.

Own Boat Tuition

You can if you wish, use your own boat for training. However, if in the opinion of the instructor the boat is not considered in a suitable condition nor suitably equipped for training, we reserve the right to refuse it going on the water, with no recourse to refund. In checking the equipment on the boats, only very minor repairs or additions may be undertaken by the Instructors on behalf of the Club. Parents must sign the disclaimer that their charge's boat has adequate buoyancy. Boats used for tuition must be insured to at least £2m Third Party Liability and this must include for use on training courses. All precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of all participants and boats, but due to the nature of learning, boats may have minor collisions. Neither the Club nor the instructors will be responsible for any damage to the boats taking part and your own boat is used at your own risk. We therefore recommend that Club boats are used for training courses.

1 to 1 Tuition

The Club can also offer one to one tuition. If you wish to use your own boat, please ensure you have read the paragraph above. If you wish to use a Club boat then there will be the appropriate hire fee plus an instructor fee of £40 per hour or if the instructor has to use one of the Club RIB’s, then the Instructor fee will be £60 per hour. However, this service must be approved by the Club Chief Instructor (Club Bosun) or in his absence the Club Secretary, before it can be booked through the Office, due to the demands upon Club resources.

Non-Members

If you would like to join a course and are currently not a BSC member you may join as a temporary member for the duration of the course. Temporary membership is £20 per day for Club Courses. If you subsequently decide to join BSC this will be deducted from first year fees.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

This course provides the skills and background knowledge needed by a competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

RYA Safety Boat

Widely acclaimed as one of the most useful boating courses available, this provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies and it includes how to recover a range of different watercraft. Minimum entry level RYA Powerboat Level 2.
