Although we have yet to start our racing and sailing programme for 2015 there is so much going on at the Club, something for everyone and a whole variety of different events to suit all.
Quiz night - Saturday 31st January
This event is now sold out but just because you can’t enter a team you can still come down and enjoy watching and supporting all those who will be saying ‘I know that... but now can’t remember!’
It’s guaranteed to be a fun evening regardless of whether or not you are competing, so come and join in the fun and maybe leave having expanded your general knowledge!
Race Officer Training – Sunday 1st February
This is a must for any budding Race Officers or maybe those that would like a quick refresh before the season begins. Dick Pratt will take you through all you need to know and this first session will be at 1000 hrs in the West Room for a couple of hours or so. If you would like to come along, please contact the Office ASAP as places are limited and the cost is just £5.
Our DutyMan system is now live and you can log in to choose what duty(s) you would like to do this year. Everyone between 16 and 70 is required to selected at least one duty for 2015 and full instructions are on the website, just click on the link ‘DutyMan’ and this will take you to the instructions which you will need to follow. If you have any problem, please email the Office and we will help you out.
This Saturday there will be snacks available from the kitchen between 1100 and 1500hrs and on Sunday there will be a roast. BUT, you must book otherwise there won’t be a roast. We know a number of people turned up last week and were disappointed that there was no roast but unfortunately nobody had booked so regrettably we had to cancel it. Please help us to help you, and always book for food (except snacks) at email@example.com.
Hopefully many of you will have now received your 2015 Red Book and will have seen that this year the book been expanded. We have added so extra pages to help explain how to get started if you want to go racing and also some pages at the request of some of the members, especially a page giving details of all the various classes and their sail insignia. There is also additional information regarding training listed separately for both youth and adult, with pathways to help you progress and explain the various courses. Our new training programme is about to go live and will be on the website over the next couple of days and we will be open for bookings from Monday 2nd February.
On the first Thursday of each month we have been opening the Club to non-members and the local community inviting them to come down to the Club and enjoy a meal, our fantastic location and BSC welcome. These have been steadily growing in popularity over the winter months and will start again in March, so please spread the word amongst your friends and neighbours, everyone is welcome. Full details will be on the website and on posters around the village in due course.
Sea Shanty evening 1930hrs – Saturday 7th February
Everyone enjoys a good sing along and this is an event that you must not miss. The acclaimed ‘Harbour Buoys’ will be leading everyone in song and together with a supper and the bar what better way is there to spend your Saturday evening! Tickets are £12.00 and include supper and are available from the Bar and Office, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
General Meeting – Saturday 7th February
You should by now all have received notification regarding our General Meeting, not to be confused with our AGM which is being held on the 23rd May.
This is all about a change to our Articles of Association which will enable the Club to receive grants from Sport England to enhance both our equipment and also facilities. Full details are on the website and to access the detail please first log in as a member and then click on the ‘General Meeting’ page on the Club home page and this will take you to all the detail. If you have any questions regarding the proposed changes to the Articles of Association, then these need to be in writing and sent to the Club Secretary no later than 1100hrs on Thursday 5thFebruary (firstname.lastname@example.org).
If you cannot attend and would like to vote by proxy, then please use the form on the website. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at this meeting, these are exciting times and with this change we will have our first grant of £10,000 within days!
Assistant Race Officer Training – Friday 6th February
This is our second lecture in our series of in-house training being kindly given by Dick Pratt. As before, it’s a must for any potential Assistant Race Officers or maybe those that would like a quick refresher. This session will be at 1800 hrs in the West Room and last for a couple of hours or so. If you would like to come along, please contact the Office ASAP as places are limited and the cost is just £5.
Office opening times
Unfortunately this weekend both Linda and Jane will be away on leave and Steve is at an RYA Conference so there will be nobody in the office to take your calls or answer emails. We did consider putting Gavin in the Office...but rapidly realised that this may not be a good idea! Apologies for any inconvenience but Gavin will be around if you need to speak with a member of staff or alternatively please contact Mark behind the bar, both will be happy to help wherever possible.
A couple of dates for the diary;
Saturday 28th February – A presentation by Roger Brydges from the MAIB (Marine Accident Investigation Branch) entitled ‘Sailing accidents – investigations and lessons’. This is a fascinating look at the work undertaken by the MAIB and will hopefully include some of the high profile incidents of the last year or so such as ‘Cheeki Rafike’ and ‘Liquid Vortex’.
Friday 6th March - Henning’s wine tasting evening at the Club House, guaranteed to be a sell out and what more do we need to say, it’s a must!
