BSC Regatta – Message from Nigel Russell, RC Dinghies:
All those who have prepared for many months for our Regatta have been very disappointed that it was necessary to cancel our major sailing event. The following has been sent to me by Nick Fox, our PRO for this event, who has ultimate responsibility for the proper conduct of the racing:
From a pure sailing point of view the decision to call off the Regatta had to be taken when it was on a balance of probabilities. We were faced with a relatively stable met forecast over several days which showed on Thursday lunch time a forecast for Saturday of Force 4/5 gusting up to 7. With the possibility gusts at Near Gale, cancellation was right.
7 most dinghies stay ashore those that go afloat risk gear failure.
6 is a dinghy sailors gale often difficult to make progress without reefing
5 capsizing common amongst experienced crew.
The regatta is part social as well as sailing. We have 11 separate consecutive starts. They are mixed fleets with a variety of skill levels. The Regatta is not the event for bravado.
Members will realise that these judgement calls are necessary and that the Club takes its responsibilities for assessing risks in that regard very seriously.
I will work with the Flag Officers and Class Captains to see if it could be possible to run the Regatta on another date, however this is looking difficult at present.
