Laser (Cadets)

Welcome to the Cadet section of Laser sailing at Bosham Sailing Club.

The Laser is now officially known as the ILCA dinghy.

"The ILCA is a single-handed racing dinghy. Each dinghy is virtually identical whether they are brand new or 10 years old, making it the sailor that wins the race, not the boat. The ILCA is a challenging boat that rewards athleticism, subtle steering and trimming techniques, as well as tactical excellence. It is a singlehanded Olympic class boat for both men and women and is sailed at the club, national and international levels. With over 200,000 boats in 140 countries, it is the world's most popular adult and youth racing sailboat."

There are three different rigs (sail sizes) available:

Laser 4.7 / ILCA 4

Age 14-16 years old - Weight 54-64kgs

Laser Radial / ILCA 6

Age 15-18+ years old - Weight 64-75kgs

Laser Standard / ILCA 7

Age 16+ years old - Weight 75-90ks

Bosham Sailing Club has a clear 'single-handed pathway' for Cadets, progressing from the Optimist to the Topper and then the Laser. There is excellent training and racing provision at every stage, with constant emphasis on enjoyment and improvement. The Cadet Laser class at BSC is friendly and inclusive, whatever your sailing ability. We welcome everyone, whether a summer sailor whose main focus is enjoying wonderful Junior Week, to those aspiring to sail at a national level.

Bosham Sailing Club supports cadets sailing any of the three Laser rigs. The current Portsmouth Yardstick will be applied for any handicap sailing, this being available for all three sail sizes. This means that competitive sailing is available for any cadet using any rig.

BSC Junior Week can also be sailed in any of the three options, but each sailor must only use one sail size for the whole event. There is a single Laser fleet start, but prizes are awarded for each of the three sub-fleets.
