Cadets

We encourage our cadets' sailing through our racing, training and social calendar and instill a love of the sport that will stay with them as they grow up and take off to sail at their universities and throughout their adult lives. No surprise that many of our grown up 'cadets' return to BSC regularly and bring a whole new generation of cadets with them!We aim to develop and retain the best young racing sailors. In 2025 we were one of the first clubs in the country to be awarded Pathway status by the RYA, reconising our commitment to high-quality junior and youth race training. BSC cadets are well represented amongst various regional and GBR sailing squads.

Cadet fleets: We support the British Youth and Junior Sailing recognised classes of Optimist, Topper, ILCA 4/6/7 (Laser 4.7, Radial, Standard) for single-handers and RS Feva XL and 420 for double-handers. Plus we have a strong fleet of Mirrors. Each fleet has a dedicated class captain.

Training: RYA Youth dinghy sailing courses for members and non-members plus race coaching for all the fleets for members.

Racing: A full programme of racing is available with regular club racing provided for all fleets. Optimists benefit from having separate racing with gold and silver fleets in the sheltered area of Cutmill, which is also used for the monthly Super Sundays. In the club racing, Topper, Feva, Mirror and ILCA 4 start in slow handicap, ILCA 6 and 7 and 420 start in fast handicap. In addition there are trophy racing series, where there is a separate cadet handicap start. The club pursuit races are open to all above silver Optimist and are very popular, pitting cadet sailors directly against the adults, and often winning! Junior Regatta at Whitsun is an early season highlight for all cadet classes and cadets also participate in the full Bosham Sailing Club Regatta in August .

Junior Week: Traditionally held over the second week in August, this is the highlight of the cadet social and racing calendar for cadets aged 8-18. Qualification rules apply for Junior Week entry.

Social: In addition to Junior Week there are numerous other social events throughout the year for cadets; Easter egg hunts, Scottish reeling, Halloween activities, discos to name a few

Rowing: Our cadets are now participating regularly in club rowing activities. In 2025 a cadet crew participated in the Great River Race on the Thames, coming a close second in their class.

Cadet Committee: Many of the cadet events are supported or organised by the cadet committee. The committee is made up of sixth formers aged 16-18 years and is headed up by a Captain and Vice Captain each year selected by their peers. It is a fun and rewarding opportunity for our older cadets and something for our younger cadets to look forward to being part of in the future.
