BSC Adult Training

Bosham Sailing Club provides high quality dinghy, powerboat and shorebased training for all ages and abilities, run from our stunning location at Bosham Quay. We are an RYA Recognised Training Centre (RTC) which means that we operate in compliance with the conditions set down by the national governing body (Royal Yachting Association). The Principal and Chief Instructor of the Bosham Sailing Club RTC is our sailing manager, Mike Storey.

RYA recognition means that all of our sailing courses and training are run by qualified staff, trained by the RYA to provide a required standard of tuition, following the relevant syllabi, using appropriate well-maintained equipment with suitable safety support and with approved instructor:student ratios.

Our adult training is for ages 16 and older and follows the RYA adult pathway from beginners to advance performance sailors. Click here for a downloadable leaflet or see details below. Our RYA courses are open to members and non-members and can be viewed via our website calendar or booked directly online here.

We also offer private tuition sessions for members and non-members. These are also on our calendar and bookable directly online here.

Course fees include use of BSC training boats, and approved buoyancy aids if required. Other equipment such as wetsuits and spray tops are not provided but can be acquired cheaply. The RYA Adult Sailing logbook is included for Level 1 students or can be purchased from BSC here.

Please note that whatever the weather conditions throw at us we always endeavour to allow students to achieve the standard required for each RYA level, but in some circumstances this just isn't possible.

Visit our full training calendar here. For any questions relating to training, please contact BSC Training.

RYA Adult Dinghy Level 1 - Start Sailng

This two-day course is a great introduction to dinghy sailing for beginners with no experience of sailing. The course focuses on how to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering. At the end of the course successful students should be able to sail in light winds under supervision. We teach this primarily in single-handed dinghies with a maximum student to instructor ratio of 6:1 but we can run up to a 3:1 session in the club Bahias.

RYA Adult Dinghy Level 2 - Basic Skills

Level 2 is the minimum standard required to be able to hire club boats.

This two-day course builds on the foundations of Level 1. The course includes rigging, launching, sailing in all directions. Capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge is also included. By the end of this course you'll be a competent sailor in light winds, able to sail confidently on all points of sail and make appropriate decisions in good conditions. We teach this primarily in single-handed dinghies with a maximum student to instructor ratio of 6:1.

RYA Adult Dinghy Level 3 - Better Sailing

Improve your sailing, consolidate skills and try new ones in a variety of conditions. The two-day course offers coaching to develop the skills learned during previous levels, including crewing and helming and more advanced sailing techniques. Successful students will be more confident in their independent sailing ability and ready to progress onto the advanced modules. We teach this course in the club Bahias with a maximum student to instructor ratio of 9:1.

Personal Tuition

Personal tuition sessions are available for up to three students per instructor in one booking. Suitable for beginner, intermediate or advanced sailors, we can tailor the session to your requirements and use either club boats or your own boat. We schedule these sessions to take advantage of favourable tides to maximise time on the water.

These sessions are perfect as a refresher before undertaking your next RYA level or as a direct assessment working towards an RYA level. It is usually possible to cover a full RYA level in three PT sessions.

For any questions relating to PTs, please contact BSC Training.
