Sadly the Classic Boat Revival is not going ahead this year, but in true Bosham style we won't be denied our weekend sailing fix. On Saturday 3rd Sept we'll run a no-pressure
pursuit race. We haven't run a pursuit race for some years, so this will be a lot of fun.
- This is a fun race for BSC members only (non member guests can crew).
- The race is open to all dinghies and all sailors including cadets, although sadly the race will not be suitable for silver Oppies. Having said that there is a high probability that an Optimist will win!
- Pre-entry is essential so we can plan numbers and sort out starting sequences. Enter free under 'Tickets' below.
- A Special Notice of Race is available under 'Downloads' below. Sailing Instructions will be published shortly. There will be a briefing beforehand on the patio at 14:30. The current thinking is a committee boat start around 15.30, a 90 minute race for the Optimists with a finish in Bosham Channel around high tide.
For those who don't know, a pursuit race is like a handicap race in reverse. In a handicap race, everyone starts together, sails the course and has their elapsed time adjusted for their boat handicap. A pursuit race is for a set elapsed time, in this case probably 90 minutes. The slowest boats (Optimist) start first and faster boats start at intervals, depending on their handicap. Everyone sails the same set course, which will probably end up in a loop, and in theory every boat sails to their handicap and ends up at the same point after 90 minutes is up. In practice its nothing like that, but it is a sailing version of the tortoise and the hare.
We will need some duty volunteers to help run this event:
- A start team on Glad Emma to help set the boats off
- Patrol drivers and crew to keep everyone safe
- A finishing team, which may be the same as the start team, to finish boats when the time is up.
Please sign up for duties in the usual way on the website.
So, mark your diaries, choose your weapon and get ready to fight for every inch on the water!
Please contact the sailing manager, RC Dinghies or Barry Colgate for more information.
