BSC Hydro-Electric Project

Published 17:06 on 30 Mar 2022

Rebecca Mayhew, RC Planning and Howard MacKenzie-Wilson, our Water Bailiff, are investigating the possibility of installing some form of hydro-electric power-generating plant in the millrace at the clubhouse. There are several technologies that might be applicable, ranging from a simple modern water wheel to one of several types of more sophisticated water turbines, but water extraction upstream has reduced the flow since Bosham Mill last operated in 1934, when there were two water wheels in action, driving five-pairs of millstones.

To satisfy the Environment Agency, from whom we must obtain first approval before applying for planning permission, we must produce a professional feasibility study for this project. This project has enthusiastic support in principle from the Bosham Parish Council, The Chichester Harbour Conservancy and the Bosham Association. The cost of such a study is of the order of £3,500 and the probable cost of such a project would be of the order of £100,00 to £250,000, depending upon the technology selected. With current escalating energy costs, the economics of such a scheme are improving daily, though they have hardly been commercially viable, hitherto.

Members are invited to comment upon the attractiveness of this concept, which would certainly be a high profile and newsworthy project for the club. Any members who feel that they could contribute, either with appropriate expertise or financially, towards the feasibility study, are invited to contact RC Planning. Any comments and suggestions would be much appreciated.
