Safety at Sea - Technical and Medical with a Cruising focus

Presented by Merrick Rayner and Martin Thomas

Thursday 25 March at 18:00

Merrick has put together a presentation that was motivated by a close encounter with some lobster pots in dense fog on his way to France which resulted in a rescue by the RNLI and replacement of a long serving liferaft on Sundancer (pictured above), the Oyster 42 which he owns with John Nelson and is moored in Bosham channel. Merrick does admit to having been on the helm at the time! Both factors have resulted in them looking more closely at the safety equipment they have onboard and making some changes as a result. Merrick will also provide a PDF with a detailed generic safety list which will be available as a guide to members as a reference document.

Martin, a retired surgeon and a Bosham Sailing Club member who has done some extensive cruising will deliver an illustrated talk with slides.

The message is that "Prevention is better than cure. Advice on how to avoid medical problems on board when sailing your boat out at sea - from seasickness to jellyfish stings, from hypothermia to head injury. Basic simple instruction, when aboard, on the treatment of bleeding, burns, fractures and the rest".

A Zoom link will be sent on the morning of the talk along with a PDF detailed generic safety list.
