Bosham Finn Open - 24th/25th June 2023
Warm weather and a gentle breeze greeted the sailors taking part in the Bosham Finn Open, including 6 sailors from Bosham.
3 races each day, around Harbour marks in Chichester Harbour, was the plan as long as the wind played ball.
Saturday racing started after a short delay to allow sailors to get to the start from Bosham, upwind against the tide took longer than some had allowed. 3 sailors had sailed across from HISC so were well warmed up and joined the rest of the fleet. Wind direction had settled by midday to be SSW, about 10 knots, allowing reasonable length beats.
A lead rib was used to guide sailors around the courses but still allowed some degree of navigation from sailors on which side of the channel to opt for when going against or with the tide.
Race 1 saw Tim Carver getting the best of the conditions and course, followed home by James Cole and Roman Khodykin.
Race 2 saw a similar story, with Tim taking another win from Roman in second, and Julian Smith third.
Race 3 saw a steadily improving Julian take the win, with Tim in second and Russ Ward in third.
The sailors then sailed back to Bosham to enjoy Tea, sandwiches and cake in Bosham Sailing Club.
Day 2 started with the sailors allowing more time to get to the start, with a gradually increasing wind a little more than the previous day, and although the forecast had been for SE, it had settled again on SSW.
Race 4 again saw Tim take the win, from Matt Walker who had sailed over from HISC to join in for the day, followed by Julian in third.
Race 5 saw a gradually increasing breeze, with Julian taking the win from Tim and Roman in third.
Race 6, with the wind now nudging 15 knots, and the HISC sailors making a course for home to avoid the stronger winds forecast, saw Martin Hughes leading the way and taking victory in his classic. Julian was second, with James Cole in third.
Sailors then made their way back to Bosham for more tea, sandwiches and cakes, and the prize giving.
Results
Martin Hughes retained the Amoeba Trophy for first classic boat, and with the last race win, managed third overall.
Second place was Julian Smith, with Tim Carver claiming the overall victory and receiving the Bosham Plate.
Steve Board was best placed Bosham entrant, sailing a borrowed Finn for the first time, his results gradually improved all weekend, even achieving a fourth in the final race, and seventh overall.
