Eagle-Eyed Litter Hunters collect 10 bags at Bosham, over 250kg across the Harbour

Thank you to the 28 volunteers who came to the Beach Clean celebrating Chichester Harbour Federation's Centenary and the 60th anniversary of Chichester Harbour being designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

At first the volunteers weren't sure how much litter would be found, but in the end collected 10 bags from the quay, dinghy park, Cutmill shore and Rythe End.

The amount of plastic at Rythe End was most shocking with hundreds of plastic pellets, called nurdles, spotted within the seaweed. These were reported to Great Nurdles Hunt, which is an organisation collecting data to make the plastic industry aware of the extent of the pollution problem. Also spotted at Rythe End were Mermaids Purses. You can also record these finds via The Great Eggcase Hunt, however eggcase identification and photos necessary so something to learn for next time.

At Rythe End the larger, easier to collect pieces of plastic were also not in short supply so a good place to target next time. As one picker said: "I thought Bosham was clean and we wouldn't find much but here it is a pigsty."

Thank you again to all the brilliant volunteers. Often the finds are tiny pieces of plastic so it takes patience and beady eyes!

Across the wider Harbour, over 250kg was collected by over 170 volunteers. See the full report in 'Downloads' below.

We will hopefully be running a second beach clean later on in the year. See you then.
