Storm Eunice Hits Bosham

Published 17:10 on 22 Feb 2022

It was forecast. We were ready. But when she hit last Friday, Storm Eunice hit hard. At Cambermet the mean wind speed was over 40kts from 10:00 to 15:00 with a peak gust of 64.1kts. Waves that built up from these quite unprecedented wind speeds from the WSW and the low pressure from the storm caused a 0.6m tidal surge that overwhelmed the quay at high tide around lunchtime. Conditions were quite the worst anyone could remember. But to be honest it could have been even worse. The forecast high tide was 'only 4.6m' and the pressure dropped to 'only 990mBar'. So we escaped disaster. The marquee stayed up, the pump worked (just), the club did not flood, the flagpole did not fall down. The anemometer pole on the clubhouse gable was not so lucky. Boats left on the quay took a battering and were strewn all over the place. They have been moved onto the meadow. The dinghy park was ravaged, but most boats stayed upright. Many covers did not survive. Sterling work was done to prop up overturned boats and to turn boats into the wind. Owners have been notified.

We live to fight another day. And on Monday it was pretty windy as well!
