THE BIG SLEEP
Howard Hawks directed this film of a Raymond Chandler novel in 1946. It is best known for the sizzling chemistry between Humphrey Bogart, who plays Chandler's Philip Marlowe private detective and Lauren Bacall, the scheming daughter of his client. They were married by the time it was released. The plot is famously labyrinthine (script by William Faulkner) but involves blackmail, murder, drugs and gambling, peppered by razor sharp dialogue all in an atmosphere of dark intrigue. Bogart was never better in one of the great movies of all time.
