Junior Regatta
Wow! What an incredible day we had for the BSC Junior Regatta on Saturday. The sun shone brightly and the wind built nicely as the day progressed to a perfect 12-14kts. All in all, it was simply the most idyllic sailing conditions for our 78 cadets taking part.
The buzz around the club started with morning tea, coffees and freshly baked pastries on the terrace served by Candida and Claire along with some well known chillout tunes playing in the background from the 70s. After a short welcome by Katherine Rose, RC Cadets followed by an Optimist briefing by Barry Colgate, RO, the cadets seamlessly tallied-on and launched in fleet order aided by our super efficient tally and launch team, Charlotte, Richard, Charlie and Polly.
There were 31 Optimists on the quay start line which gave a fantastic spectacle for parents and grandparents watching. The whoops and cheers (and on occasions, head in the hands moments) as the Optimists sailed past could be heard from all around the quay and meadow. There was never a dull moment especially amongst the silvers. Silver Oppie, Izzy had a blinder in the first race coming 3rd overall in the combined silver/gold race. In the 2nd race there was only a handful of sailors (5) that sailed the first lap correctly! Overall it was an impressive performance from all our Optimists especially our new sailors this year who only started racing since Easter. Their progress is phenomenal and it is a true testament to all the BSC training, and practicing that has taken place.
The remaining fleets raced from the committee boat which was efficiently led by the experienced race team of Will Curtis, Simon Radford, George Kent and Lucy Chaplin. The 14 toppers had an action packed 3 races that took them all around the harbour with a few capsizes along the way. The first race was won by Sam Colgate but sadly in race 2 he had rig failure so had to retire for the rest of the day. In each race, finishing positions amongst the fleet kept on changing, however Alice managed to secure the wins in race 2&3 closely followed by Otis.
In the Feva's, our newcomers this season, Italians Alice and Silvia had some real 'Luna Rossa' moments. Prior to joining BSC, their previous sailing experience was in non-tidal waters on a warm Italian Lake so it is a big change for them being here! Hotly in pursuit was Isabelle and Bettina who were on fire! There was literally nothing between these 2 boats in each of the 3 races but in the end Silvia and Alice secured the win. Big thanks go to Francesca Aston and Bella Rose who provided lots of entertainment for the Feva fleet (and spectators) with their onboard sound system a combination of their singing and music booming from their speaker. It looked like you were really enjoying yourselves girls!!
Honor and Frederick, our 2 lasers had a nail biting first race with Honor finishing half a boat length in front of Fred. However Fred managed to up his game and win the 2nd and 3rd race. Exciting stuff lasers!
The 420's provided some incredibly exciting racing too and it was a great to see the teenagers all having so much fun. Every race was won by a different boat so it meant that it all came down to the last race to determine the fleet winners. In the end, Ed and Fred pipped it, but only just!
Well done to every single cadet taking part in the Regatta, it was fantastic to see all your smiles and happy faces as you returned back to BSC after a fun day out on the water. Congratulations go to our winners:
Optimist Silver Jack Gardner
Optimist Gold Tom Eastwood
Topper Alice Chaplin
RS Feva Alice & Silvia Gelosi
Laser Frederick Chaplin
420 Ed Timberlake and Fred Langhorne
After the racing was completed, the buzz around BSC continued back at the Clubhouse where drinks and Tacos were thoroughly enjoyed on the terrace in the sunshine. Huge thanks must be given to everyone for their huge support for the event, but especially our small army of our volunteer helpers and BSC staff Kathrine, Mike and Gavin who made it all happen so smoothly and efficiently. A massive BSC team effort and wonderful Bosham Spirit on display throughout. Thank you to you all. Katherine Rose, RC Cadets.

The postponed Nab Tower Race is now taking place this Sunday and the forecast is looking good. There is still time to enter. Entries close on the 10th June
Optimist Open Meeting Sunday 13 June
The BSC Optimist Open Meeting on Sunday 13 June will be one of the biggest sailing events of the year at the club. 88 boats are entered across gold and silver fleets, including members of the Oppie Worlds and Europeans squads and several offspring of Olympic medal winners. The event was full within three weeks of bookings opening in mid-April and entries have been closed since early May. No more entries can be taken, and no entries will be allowed on the day.
Racing for the gold fleet will take place from Glad Emma in the harbour under the direction of PRO Piers Shepherd and for the silver fleet from the Cobnor line under the direction of RO Barry Colgate. The majority of boats will be launching from Cobnor but BSC and other harbour club boats may launch locally and sail out to the start areas. It certainly will be a sight to behold on the water.
For those entered there is a dedicated Oppie Open WhatsApp group for all announcements and messages.
In addition to staff, there is a gargantuan duty team delivering this event (34 and counting), recruited primarily from the Oppie fleet. However, we still need to fill a few places, namely:
Committee Boat Driver and AARO This is the perfect role for a powerboater/aspiring race officer to experience how things are run on the water. Maybe one of the participants in Dick Pratt's excellent race officer sessions earlier this year can step into this role?
Gold Fleet Power Boat Driver
Gold Fleet Power Boat Crew x2
Silver Fleet Power Boat Crew
Cobnor Hut Tea Helper
Cobnor Car Park Marshal - Early start but finished by the time the boats go afloat.
Please volunteer for these duties in the usual way and help make this showpiece event for the club run like clockwork.
Food This Sunday
It's going to be a scorcher this Sunday, so why not join us on the terrace for lunch in the sun. This weekend we are serving a delicious range of cold platters - seafood, charcuterie and ploughmans, and scampi & chips for children. Please book in advance - they'll be available all afternoon, so perfect if you're coming back from the Nab Tower race; from the Oppie Open at Cobnor, or if you just fancy a day off from catering!
