UK Sailing Team Success for Bosham Oppie Sailors
Following their participation in the pre-qualification series at Draycote in March, India and Tom Eastwood and Zac and Pippa Shepherd were invited to take part in the U15 sailing trials held over four days at the National Sailing Academy in Weymouth. Based on their strong performance at Draycote, Tom and Pippa had already been selected for the U12 sailing team at the Irish Nationals.
The plan was for 12 races to be held over four days, however unfortunately the wind was lacking and only 5 races were managed with no sailing on the last two days. Race No 5 was particularly tough with a big wind shift resulting in the fleet inversing and a high score race that could not be discarded for our top sailors. The sailing was ultra competitive and all Bosham sailors did BSC proud. In between racing, plenty of fun was had in the boat park where there was an abundance of scooters and skateboards to keep the children entertained.
The biggest achievement goes to India Eastwood for being selected to the GBR European team competing at the European Championships in Sonderborg, Denmark just before our very own Junior Week. The GBR team comprises three girls and four boys and 255 sailors in total will be competing from 43 different nations. Zac and Pippa Shepherd were both selected to the Development Team 1, comprising eleven children heading-off to Costa Brava in Spain in June for the Spring Cup. Tom performed strongly and was the most honourable after losing a 6th place to tie a sail tie that had come loose. This "True Grit" Bosham behaviour that we are so proud of impacted his overall position, but he was still selected for Development Team 2, which comprises sixteen children competing at the French Nationals in July.
Well done to all of the children for doing so well and we look forward to hearing how the events go.
If anyone is interested in pursuing the RYA squad and team pathway, they should plan on attending the Regional Championships at the National Sailing Academy on 18/19th June which is a selection event for the Regional Training Groups, with our very own Bosham Oppie Open on 17th September being a secondary indicator event.
