Laser Fleet Racing
Last Saturday saw the BSC Lasers out on the water for their fleet racing day. Although light winds and shifty conditions, 10 standard rigs and 6 radials made the most of the committee boat starts expertly put in place by Dick Pratt and his race team. Close racing was guaranteed with race positions changing place on every leg. A huge thanks to all sailors and congratulations to our series winners, Ed Clay in the full rig and Eddie Lister in the radial rig.

ILCA 6 - James Curtis
Despite all the Covid restrictions, 16 year old BSC sailor James Curtis has had a busy winter training in the ILCA 6 (Laser Radial). He spent weekends and holidays sailing in Weymouth, Poole and Lymington with a few of his contemporaries.
In May he was selected to join the ILCA 6 RYA National Youth Squad, so he has been spending a lot of time down at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) with the GBR coaches. The rest of the week has been taken up with Zoom briefings and debriefings, fitness, and GCSEs.
There have been three big events so far this year that attracted all the national sailors. James has more than held his own, having a solid start to the season. In the most recent event, held last weekend at Stokes Bay, 65 ILCA 6 sailors (youth, adult, men and women) competed over two days. James finished 6th overall, and was 1st under 17 year old. (To put this into perspective, 5th place was 30 year old Hannah Snellgrove three times national champion, 7th in the world in 2019, and currently campaigning for Paris 2024 Olympics).
However, James knows that sailing is always full of highs and lows. His focus is on big event experience, not results, and gaining all the learning he can over the summer.
James departs for Croatia for the European ILCA 6 European Championships shortly. He will be travelling with five other GBR sailors from the Youth Squad. It's a pretty big event with about 300 ILCA 6 competitors. He's really looking forward to sailing somewhere new and warm!
The BSC Youth Fund has been very kind and generous in helping James be competitive this year. James has also secured some limited sponsorship from Rooster and Allen. If any other business would like a sticker on his boat or back of his lifejacket, then I'm sure he'd be happy to chat!

Floating Along With The Lottery
The BSC 50/50 Lottery, like most things, is returning to standard operating procedures, after a long time virtual.
The June bonus draw (click here for winners) was the second held on the terrace. This afforded the opportunity to let those on the sunny terrace know of two purchases using the lottery fund. The first is a pair of very superior gates fronting the meadow. The second is a tandem paddleboard.
The tandem measures 4.27m (14 ft) in length and can carry 230 kg (507 lb) and perfect for families or a pair of adults. If you have been wanting to go on a SUP but were anxious going solo, now you can buddy up and share one board to enjoy the channel and beyond. Having tested it with Laura Bradley (PS Capt.), we can confirm it is very stable, easy for two people to lift and gives you the best floating picnic table anywhere on the South Coast. It will be available for booking from 1 July via the website here.
The next lottery will be held on July 9 at 19.30 when three monthly winners will be drawn. Hopefully it will also be possible to announce other projects to be funded through the members' past and ongoing generosity. There's an awful lot of good that can be done with £8 a month.
To join: email lottery@boshamsailingclub.com and Lottery Lyn will get the paperwork to you.
